Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) emphasizes the significance of our thoughts in influencing our emotions and actions. The therapist helps in recognizing, evaluating the validity of beliefs that underlie their thought processes. CBT involves a structured partnership between the therapist and client, often involving assigned tasks outside of therapy sessions. Scientifically validated, CBT has demonstrated its effectiveness in relatively short periods, offering assistance to individuals dealing with various disorders, including depression and anxiety.

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is a short-term, structured psychotherapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and communication to reduce emotional distress. It addresses issues like grief, role transitions, interpersonal conflicts, and social isolation. By enhancing social skills and resolving relationship problems, IPT helps individuals manage mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. It typically lasts 12-16 sessions and is focused on current issues rather than past trauma.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals with emotion regulation difficulties, particularly those with borderline personality disorder. Developed by Marsha M. Linehan,Dialectical Behavior Therapy integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. It focuses on building skills in distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and acceptance. The dialectical aspect emphasizes finding a balance between acceptance and change, encouraging individuals to acknowledge and validate their emotions while also working towards behavioral changes that enhance their overall well-being. DBT is known for its structured and skills-based nature, making it effective for managing intense emotions and improving interpersonal relationships.

Mindfulness-based techniques

Mindfulness-based techniques in therapy involve incorporating mindfulness principles and practices to enhance mental well-being. Therapists often guide individuals in cultivating present-moment awareness, non-judgmental observation of thoughts and emotions, and a compassionate acceptance of their experiences. Mindfulness-based interventions may include formal practices, such as mindfulness meditation or body scans, as well as informal techniques that encourage mindfulness in daily life. These approaches are employed to address issues like stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation. By fostering a mindful awareness, individuals can develop greater resilience, emotional regulation, and a deeper understanding of their thoughts and behaviors.

Emotionally-Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is an attachment-focused, humanistic, and systemic approach that emphasizes the importance of emotions in shaping relationships and human experiences. Rooted in attachment theory, EFT helps individuals explore and process emotions within the context of their relationships, fostering secure emotional bonds. The therapy focuses on understanding and transforming maladaptive emotional patterns, particularly in intimate relationships, to promote deeper emotional connections and more adaptive responses. By emphasizing emotional attunement and validating emotional needs, EFT helps individuals navigate their emotional experiences, improve interpersonal relationships, and enhance psychological well-being. EFT is particularly effective in treating relationship issues, trauma, and mood disorders, creating lasting emotional healing and healthier connections.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered therapeutic approach designed to explore and resolve ambivalence towards behavior change. Developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI is rooted in the collaborative and empathetic exploration of an individual's motivations for change. Rather than imposing solutions, therapists using MI aim to elicit and strengthen the person's own intrinsic motivation and commitment to altering problematic behaviors. The technique involves reflective listening, open-ended questions, and the affirmation of positive aspects within the individual. MI is commonly applied in addressing issues such as addiction, health behavior change, and psychological concerns, with the ultimate goal of empowering clients to make informed decisions and embrace positive changes in their lives.

Couples Therapy Roadmap

01

INITIAL CONSULTATION

We will begin with a free 20-minute consultation to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and determine whether couples therapy is the right fit for your needs and goals.

02

INITIAL COUPLES THERAPY SESSION

The first couples therapy session is a 90-minute intake session attended by both partners together. This session provides a safe, supportive space for each of you to openly share your concerns and perspectives on the relationship. My goal is to gain an understanding of your situation and to clarify your therapy goals.

03

INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS

Following the intake, each partner participates in an individual session. These sessions allow for the exploration of personal experiences that are important for therapeutic understanding. A detailed history of significant relationships is also gathered to better understand emotional patterns, attachment experiences, and relational dynamics.

04

ONGOING COUPLES THERAPY SESSIONS

In the third session, we reunite as a team to explore how each partner’s attachment style—shaped by early life experiences—impacts the relationship today. During this session, we also establish the focus, structure, and recommended frequency of ongoing therapy. Subsequent couples therapy sessions will be attended together. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly or bi-weekly. Consistency, commitment, and active participation are essential for meaningful and lasting change. As progress continues, the frequency of sessions may be gradually reduced.

Our Approach

Evidence-Based Approaches to Strengthening Relationships

Decades of research in couples therapy show that partners thrive when they feel emotionally connected, communicate effectively, and have tools to navigate conflict with compassion. Two of the most well-researched and widely respected methods—Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and The Gottman Method—offer clear, effective pathways for improving relationship satisfaction. At OHC, we use both approaches in our work to help couples deepen their bond, repair disconnection, and build healthier patterns that last.

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT)
Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is a leading evidence-based approach focused on strengthening emotional connection. At the core of EFT is the concept of the negative cycle—the repeating pattern couples fall into when they feel hurt, insecure, or disconnected. This cycle often shows up as pursuing, distancing, shutting down, or escalating conflict. In EFT, couples learn to recognize this cycle as the common enemy, not each other. By slowing down these moments and exploring the underlying emotions and attachment needs, partners can respond to one another with more safety, openness, and understanding. This helps reduce conflict, increase trust, and create a more secure, loving bond.

The Gottman Method for Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method is a highly researched, structured approach to improving relationship satisfaction and communication. A key element of this model is identifying and reducing the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling. These communication patterns, if left unaddressed, can weaken emotional connection and increase resentment. Through therapy, couples learn practical tools to replace the Four Horsemen with healthier alternatives like gentle start-ups, taking responsibility, expressing appreciation, and practicing self-soothing. The Gottman Method also emphasizes building friendship, emotional attunement, and shared meaning, providing couples with a strong foundation for long-term relationship health.

How can we help?

At OHC, we integrate the emotional depth of EFT with the practical strategies of the Gottman Method to offer a balanced and effective approach to couples therapy. EFT helps couples understand the deeper emotions and attachment needs fueling their negative cycle, while the Gottman Method provides concrete skills to shift unhelpful communication patterns like the Four Horsemen.

Bringing these approaches together allows us to support couples in creating lasting change—strengthening connection, improving communication, and rebuilding trust. Our therapy space is compassionate, collaborative, and focused on helping both partners feel heard, supported, and empowered to build a more secure and fulfilling relationship.
